The South African senior K1 teams at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships came away without any medals on a hot days racing in Eastern China that saw new records being set.
Dane Mads Pedersen rocked the blue-ribbon
Men’s K1 race by winning his first senior world title, less than 24 hours
after he won the Under 23 K1 crown, becoming the first person to accomplish
this, and dethroning South African champion Andy Birkett in the process.
Birkett was a dominant force throughout race, and managed the four boat
breakaway that took charge of the second half of the race.
Birkett was last going into the final portage and could only watch as
Pedersen raced away to win from Portugal’s Jose Ramalho and feisty
Argentinean Franco Balboa.
In the women’s K1 race both South African challengers Jenna Ward and
Bridgitte Hartley started strongly. Ward managed to stay comfortably in the
top ten until a strong four-boat breakaway took control of the front of the
race.
Ward ended up ninth in her first senior world championships outing, while
Hartley, who battled throughout, did not complete the race.
“It is definitely a step up from Under 23 racing!” said Ward.
“It was really fast out there and really hot – it felt like I was in the
Dusi valley!”
“I tried to conserve as much as possible for tomorrow’s doubles race, and I
am feeling good for for that,” she added.
Sunday’s racing concludes the championships with the senior men’s and women’s K2 races.
