Canoeing SA was well represented at the recent Athlete’s Indaba at SASCOC headquarters where IOC President Thomas Bach joined the discussions as part of his tour of Africa.
Canoeing SA (CSA) was represented by Kim Pople, the CSA President and SASCOC Board Member; Nkosi Mzolo, CSA Board Member and Paris24 Team Manager; Esti Olivier, a top sprint paddler and Paris24 Team Member; and Alexa Godden. A paddler and U23 World Sprint Championship Team Member.
The discussions focused on the outcomes and lessons of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. During an hour-long Q&A session, Bach was asked about subjects ranging from athlete safeguarding and gender balance to the possibility of future Olympic Games being held in Africa.
Bach was welcomed by the President of the National Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Barry Hendricks, IOC Honorary Member Sam Ramsamy and IOC Member Anant Singh, and he was accompanied by IOC Member and President of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), Mustapha Berraf. He also had a meeting with the SASCOC Board members and national federation presidents and secretaries general.
