Hi ,

Less than a month is squeezed in between our national sprint championships and our national marathon championships.

In this short period, all of the unions will be hosting their provincial championships, most of them, this weekend.

GCU, WCCU and KNCU will all have crowned their annual champions by Sunday afternoon. Only the gritty ECCU paddlers are going to risk a full marathon a week before the national one.

So, this time next week, the cat will be out of the bag. Those paddlers who have been holding their cards close to their chests will be exposed and we will have a preview of who will be likely to stick their heads out on the "Vlei" in just over two weeks' time.

If the entry for SA Schools and SA Sprints is any barometer to measure the propensity of paddlers to travel, then the SA Marathon Champs is going to be a hugely well supported affair.

The three places to be this weekend will be Victoria Lake for the GCU champs, Peninsula Canoe Club for the WCCU champs and the newly renovated Shongweni for the KNCU champs.

Another weekly reminder to those who fancy themselves in green and gold. Nomination forms for the national marathon team are available in electronic format on the CSA website (under disciplines and marathon) just click HERE. The closing date is the 18th of May.

We don't want tears like some of the sprinters who surprised themselves with their performances and qualified for the team, but were rejected due to not being nominated.

Back to the classroom.

I am slowly working my way through the list of suggestions/complaints that were reflected in the survey that was conducted.

One of the laments in the questionnaire came from a member from PE (or whatever it is now called), asking why CSA did not host more events in that city.

Getting back to my explanation of the structure of CSA. The federation is club based. We only have one paid staff member and two half day employees.

The likelihood of any one of us driving down to PE to organise a race for the locals is remote. This would need to be the initiative of locally based individuals. This has just happened. I received notice on Wednesday of an exciting new surfski series that is being put together by a joint effort between Summerstrand SLSC and Bluewater Canoe Club. "The Bay" surfski series, of four races, will be held out of Pollock Beach on the  23 May, 6 and 20 June, and 4 July.

Ultimately, the success of the sport is in the hands of passionate individuals. Just normal men and women like you. Our job is to make life as easy as possible for them to flourish, by providing structure and support.

This task is made difficult by the number of, sometimes senseless, requirements that are forced on us by outside agencies, which we, in turn, are obliged to massage as best we can before having to pass them down ourselves.

I am off to a SASCOC general meeting in JHB on Saturday. The first one since the election of the new board.

What a breath of fresh air.

At last, after a decade of mismanagement, we finally have a bunch of committed individuals who have the interests of the athletes at heart.

SASCOC is no longer a swear word in public.

Best of luck to all those who will be grinding it out over the weekend.

And the joke.

Apologies for last week's. A little on the limit.

A couple of Free State hunters are out in the veld when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. His chommie whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. After the obligatory 20 minutes of listening to calming music, he eventually gets through to the disinterested operator, and gasps “My friend is dead! What can I do?”
The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. Before we make any incorrect decisions, you need to make sure he's dead.”
There is a brief silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line.
He says: “OK, now what?”
