Bouman dominates while Purchase steals it in Surf Challenge
Matt Bouman grabbed his first win in the Bay Union Surfski Series by taking advantage of superb weather conditions and his ingrained ability handling the surf to win the novel Lion of Africa Surf Challenge, while junior Kyeta Purchase pulled off a stunning come-from-behind move to take the women’s title. Berg River Canoe Marathon
WC Canoe Union are instituting a set of qualifying criteria for the Berg River Marathon in the same manner as many major ultra-marathon events. To find out about the new qualifying structure go here and to enter the 2016 edition of the race head here.
SA Marathon Championships
The South African Marathon Championships take place in the Western Cape this year over the weekend of 11-12 June. It is set to be another exciting national championship so be sure to check with your union as to how to qualify.
KwaZulu-Natal Canoe Union
There is a pre-KZN Marathon Championships event happening at Camps Drift on Saturday. Entrance is free so why not head down and get a feel for the course before the provincial championships on 21/22 May. It is also Race 4 of the Bay Union Surfski Series as the Bay Union Dairy Doubles takes centre stage! The race starts at 9am at Durban Surf.
Gauteng Canoe Union
GCU Marathon championships which take place weekend 7 and 8 May at ERK / Homestead dam – teams will be selected to represent Gauteng at the SA Marathons in June in the Western Cape. VLC will be hosting the next Klip River race as well after that on 14 May, while FLCC will host the 22nd May race – both races are suitable for novices.
Eastern Cape Canoe Union
The Eastern Cape Marathon Championships will be coming up in May. They will be happening over the weekend of 21-22 May at Settlers Dam just outside Grahamstown. Get hold of info@eccu.co.za for more information
Western Cape Canoe Union
ADT Marina Race – Saturday 7th May. The annual ADT Marina Race will take place at Peninsula Canoe Club at 9am. This is typically the season kick-off and one of the better attended events on the calendar so make sure you don’t miss it. Registration will be from 07:30 – 08:30.
The Harbour2Heads Lagoon Challenge
The Harbour to Heads race is coming up in Knysna during the Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival. Registration happens on Saturday 2 July from 12-4pm with the racing happening on Sunday 3 July at 9am. You can enter online here. Head to their Facebook page here for more information!
